Abstract Expressions
April 14th, 2012 - May 27th, 2012
Though China had a rich tradition of abstract work in the late 80s and 90s, this work and the artists that practiced it largely got eclipsed by more figurative work which was more palatable to foreign buyers. In this show, we seek to ignite interest in abstract art to reaffirm its importance in the contemporary art landscape, to explore new trajectories and see what today’s artists are doing. Though many artists in this show may not be seen as solely working in the vein of abstract, they’ve nonetheless produced some striking work which challenges the boundaries of the genre.
Using the tools of line, rhythm, repetition, texture and color – the artists in this show conjure up a diverse array of ideas, exploring concepts such as: the unknown, the fragility and mystery of organic life, group dynamics, menace, tension, the links between the human body and nature, fluctuating systems and the sublime nature of mathematical truths. Who knew that colors, lines and forms could be so verbose?
